Agent Baskerville carefully perused the letter she'd gotten, glasses glinting in the light of the gas lamp that lit her desk. After a moment's thought she took out a quill, dipped it into the cracked, serviceable inkwell that lay at the side of her desk and affixed her signature to it. Then, folding it and returning it to its envelope, she dripped hot wax onto the flap, before affixing the Cipher Pol seal onto it. The messenger who had brought her the letter accepted his renewed charge with grave solemnity, saluted, palm towards his forehead.
Dismissing him, she turned towards the window, deep in thought.
So, a high-ranking marine was in the area was he? And his subordinates had apparently thought it best to contact the Cipher Pol in case he requested the particular services that only the elite of the elite assassins could bring to bear? It was an interesting administrative chore, to be sure: the man, this Vice-Admiral Simon Briggs, hadn't commanded their presence directly.
And how could he? As a marine officer, their two branches of the World Government military power ran in parallel tracks. The marine white and the cipher pol grey. The Justice of the inspiring rescues, captured pirates, saved cities; and Dark Justice which saw to the execution of criminals, rebels, revolutionaries. One intruding into the other's affairs, or worse, requesting their help was tantamount to political suicide.
Fortunately, as a secret organization, the CP9 had no political reputation to kill. She personally had no qualms with working with the marines, it had happened before often enough. But always with the blessing of those who really ran the world. The elders of the world.
Still, if he needed someone ferreted out, he could become a powerful ally in the days to come. She had replied to their carefully crafted letter with a little suggestion of her own: why not come by? As ever, the services of the Cipher Pol were at the full disposal of those with the proper authority to use it.
