Much to Victoria’s relief, the Vice-Admiral accepted her answer right away. The trembling stopped and she was able to smile again. It was amazing how much few encouraging words and gestures could do. In all honesty, the legendary man had made quite an impression on her. She gave a determined nod when Jacob mentioned the training. Of course, a special team needed special training. It didn’t worry her in the slightest. If anything, she welcomed all training opportunities. Whenever she was called to train, she felt like for once she could allow herself to make mistakes and learn from them. It was one of the very few times she could feel relaxed and safe.
However, those pleasant thoughts had to make way for surprise when Jacob suddenly got mysterious. While she silently swore to remember, she couldn’t say she fully understood it. Victoria had chosen her path long ago. It was the one that allowed her to serve her superiors to her best ability. Whether it lead to glory or hell was irrelevant. She would know how to walk it on her own. At least so she had always thought... The last words got her thinking. Unfortunately, she just couldn’t wrap her head around it. No matter how she looked at it, the only thing in common with her and "one of the greatest marines that ever lived" was the side they had picked.
But since her superior said so, it had to be true... Somehow...
When the Vice-Admiral walked away, Victoria remained quietly at the table. Admittedly, she was nearly unbearably curious about Jacob’s mysterious words, but she just couldn’t bring herself to bother him any further. It was a lone soldier’s place to listen and obey, not to ask questions and pry. Also... She had already made a fool out of herself more times than she cared to count.... Even if her superior was lenient enough to forgive her mistakes, it would take time before she could sleep easy again. Deep down, she couldn’t help but wonder if she had made the right choice. There was simply no way to be sure if she was cut out for this job.
With a tired sigh, the Marine stood up and grabbed the lonely, dry muffin. Her appetite was long gone and there was no point in sitting around, mulling over the matter. In her silent frustration, she took aim at the far end of the cafeteria and tossed the muffin. It soared over people’s heads and landed straight into one of the trashcans, while the Marine woman walked away. Glancing around out of habit, Victoria noticed that her superior was walking at quite calm pace. She could still easily catch up to him if she wished to speak to him. Well, a part of her did. Hastening her pace, she followed after the man and was soon walking right behind him.
After gathering enough courage, Victoria stopped and spoke up. "Sir..." For a brief moment, she truly wanted to ask what he had meant earlier, but she just couldn’t get it out. The words got stuck in her throat. She lowered her gaze and a dark shadow covered her eyes. How could she even consider asking about it now? The Vice-Admiral no doubt had far more important things to do than to babysit an insecure Marine. A shiver of cold shame froze the questions in her mind and even chilled her tone into a frigid mutter. "I’ll be in my quarters if you need me. Have a nice day, sir." With that, she saluted the superior and headed towards her room.
Perhaps she would return to patrol duty once she regained her focus.
