PERSONALITY POSITIVE TRAITS: Lao Hu is a very cunning individual. He doesn't simply rush into a battle with reckless abandon - he prefers to think things through. Of course, he prefers thinking on the go and adapting to changes in the situation, but nevertheless he doesn't act without a reason. He's also very kind. Lao Hu doesn't discriminate when it comes to freeing slaves and generally has the best interests of the people at heart. He also makes sure not to injure civilians as his grudge is directed only at the World Government and the Marines. Lao Hu also doesn't abandon his comrades. When you become a member of his crew, you're more than just an extra hand on deck - you're a partner or perhaps even a family to him. He'll never abandon a friend during a fight and is willing to give his life if need be to protect his friends. Lao Hu is also brave. When he's got a goal in mind, not even the overwhelming might of the World Government can scare him. Of course, he doesn't exactly rush into things recklessly like an idiot, but even when he has every reason to fear, he still faces forwards and carries on. Lao Hu is also very diligent, never simply lying around doing nothing. Whatever the job is, if he's not busy, he'll handle it himself. He despises sitting around and doing nothing, so he forces himself to do all that he can to help around the ship. You can say many things about him, but you could never say Lao Hu is lazy. NEGATIVE TRAITS: For all his positives though, Lao Hu does have some problems. He's not a reckless hothead, but he's very stubborn. Once he's made his mind, it'll take a lot to make him change it. But sometimes he's even willing to abandon reason and do something reckless if he feel's its necessary. He's also very ruthless. When in battle, he doesn't pull his punches against the Marines. He doesn't care how many Marines die for the sake of his goals or whether or not their motives are as just as his. He's going to be thorough in how he deals with the enemy. Though generally he tries to think ahead, he can be pretty impatient. He's simply unaccustomed to sitting still. He can't handle not doing anything for more than a moment, so he generally doesn't wait a lot for people and he certainly doesn't take kindly to anyone who irritates him. Though generally a good guy, Lao Hu is in fact quite rude. He's abrasive and crass and acts like a bit of a jerk, if only because he doesn't know any other way to act. He tries to be nice, but he's still unaccustomed to the art of socializing. Know the words "Forgive and Forget"? Lao Hu doesn't. He doesn't intend to ever forget the pain and hardship he's gone through and he sure as hell will never forgive the World Government for what they've done. Abnormalities: Being a fishman, Lao Hu possesses a large dorsal fin jutting out from his back, which slides through long, thin holes he's purposely cut out of his uniform. In addition, he possesses gills on his shoulders and neck. His teeth are also incredibly sharp. But his greatest abnormality, and his greatest shame, is a number branded on his body: 24601. BACKGROUND Lao Hu Long was born the younger brother of Zambezi Long, both Shark Fishmen. The two grew up in the Fishman District, where not long after Lao Hu's birth their mother fell ill and died. Their father, a violent drunkard, didn't even both with looking after the two young boys. Rather than live a life of poverty in the Fishman District, however, Zambezi took his younger brother Lao Hu and ran to the brighter areas of Fishman Island. By the time Lao Hu was 8, he was already well-accustomed to a life of pickpocketing and theft. In order to survive, he had to do whatever he could alongside his older brother lest they both die on the streets, even if they didn't particularly like what they had to do. But eventually, a kindly instructor at the Fishman Karate Dojo gave them a place to stay and began to teach the both of them, sympathizing with their plight. Both Lao Hu and Zambezi learned a lot from the old man. Not just how to use Fishman Karate, but about the world and the people above the ocean. No longer relying on dirty methods to survive, the two youths began to grow into proper young men, each chasing after their own dreams. Zambezi, wishing to see the world, became a merchant while Lao Hu, looking to find a calling, enlisted in the Neptune Army by the age of 16. By this time he had become a strong young fighter, but unfortunately things took a turn for the worst. Two years later, when his older brother was kidnapped by slave traders, Lao Hu abandoned his post and aggressively gave chase. With reckless abandon he chased down his brother's kidnappers and fought, only to be soundly defeated by their numbers and captured. Now in the same situation as his brother, the two were sent to a faraway island to work in a coal mine. Branded with numbers and chained down, they were given pickaxes and told to dig for coal. Every day they toiled tirelessly, grasping tightly onto every day as the threat of punishment and death loomed over all of the slaves on the island. Every single last one of them was replaceable. If they didn't do their work each day, they could be removed and replaced. Lao Hu found himself despising the world. That beautiful world he'd been told about was nothing but a dream. Even Zambezi agreed that it was only a dream. Ten years passed. Now aged 28, Lao Hu had grown tired of his endless work. It had become abundantly clear that not only were the World Government never going to liberate them, but that it was indeed the Marines and the World Government who owned the slaves. With hatred in his heart and a desire to sate his bloodlust, Lao Hu decided the unthinkable - he organized a slave revolt. The battle was bloody and reckless, but by taking their captors by surprise and using their coal-mining tools to break their shackles they were able to launch an attack on their captors. In the midst of the madness however, Lao Hu soon found that another tragedy had struck - in order to protect his younger brother from a slave-owner's bullet, Zambezi leapt in the way and took the shot. Even as they overwhelmed the enemy and succeeded in their revolt, Lao Hu cried out desperately, begging his older brother to survive. But alas, Zambezi Long had given his life for the sake of his brother. After leaving the island, Lao Hu Long took his brother's body to the bottom of the ocean and gave him a burial. On his grave site, he swore an oath to himself - to create the world he and his brother dreamed about. But under the World Government that employed slavery to achieve its own ends, that couldn't be possible. So he swore to avenge his brother and tear down the hateful organization responsible for their slavery and his brother's death. Shortly after he escaped slavery, he encountered a man named Katsuro Satsuki. Even though he was a Human, he was also a Revolutionary who defied the World Government, Lao Hu found himself in awe of him and wished to follow him in his crusade against the World Government. For the next few years the two fought side-by-side, taking on the Marines and the World Government. Fueled by bloodlust and vengeance, Lao Hu fought hard for the cause of the revolution. But unfortunately, his new leader - the first Human he had grown to like - was killed in battle with the Marines. Leaving behind the cause of the Revolution to Lao Hu, Lao vowed to put every inch of his being into slaughtering the World Government and making the Revolution a success. The weapon can then be used to slice through opponents. This blade is impractical when not in water, limiting its use to when the user is in the ocean. Gauntlets: A pair of iron gauntlets worn to protect the user from enemy weapons as well as to enhance the strength of his own blows. They are capable of being used to deflect swords and clubs or even spears. The gauntlets have a silver sheen and consist of silver plates of metal held together around black gloves. Non-weapons A gourd of water that hangs by his waist. A deck of playing cards kept in a waterproof container kept in his pocket. ABILITIES Busoshoku Haki: Busoshoku Haki allows the user to create a force similar to an invisible armor around themselves. Similar to Tekkai, this allows the user to defend against attacks that would otherwise cause them harm. Only significant physical force can overcome this defense. Naturally this "invisible armor" can be used as a weapon to strike others with. It can be used to augment the user's own attacks, projected ahead of the user as pure brute force, or imbued in weapons to increase their effectiveness. Any attack enhanced by Busoshoku Haki hits immensely harder than it would normally be without it. The Kuja's Haki-imbued arrows, for example, are capable of penetrating solid stone. This type of Haki also has the ability to bypass the powers of a Devil Fruit user, touching the "substantial body" beneath whatever protection the fruit provides, such as the case of body-altering Devil Fruits such as Logia users. However, unlike seastone it does not negate a user's Devil Fruit powers, allowing them to defend themselves, and continue fighting normally.[31] By the same effect, Haki can also be used as a higher level of offensive, moreso than just bypassing a foe's Devil Fruit powers. It can be used to harden parts of one's body, turning the area black, making the user denser and more formidable, and giving their attacks greater power. RACIAL FEATURES Fishman Karate: Lao Hu was trained rigorously in the art of Fishman Karate as a young boy, and its a skill he's only refined with age. He's more than competent at the art and is capable of using many techniques. There are some techniques that have been developed by others that he has not learned how to use, but give him the chance and he'll learn to adapt new techniques to his style. Shark Jaws: Being a Shark Fishman, Lao Hu is more than capable of biting through steel using his shark teeth and powerful jaws. in the event his teeth were to somehow be broken or ripped out, he's capable of growing another set in little time at all, making him a dangerous opponent. If he chooses to, he can even rip out sets of teeth to use as handheld weapons.
