There was a crunch of boots on gravel as Flint landed on shore and cheerily dusted his hands off "Alrighty, safely made it" glancing back he watched as the burning wreckage of his erstwhile vessel crumbling beneath the waves. He was a little sad to see it go, not that you'd know to look at him he simply nodded as a sign of respect. Not many rowboats could survive being set on fire, riddled with holes and with a chunk missing due to sharks. Flint gave the poor ship an honest funeral as he watched it sink, to turn away would be disrespectful to it's sacrifice.
As the ship finally fell to the bottom of the shoreline, Flint turned on his heel and scratched his head as he tried to work out where he was. He'd been looking for the Black Moon pirates so he could repay them for inadvertently freeing him from that Marine base a few weeks ago. He glanced around the island, one of the many, many islands around the area. He'd passed through Oxygen Island a while ago (hence the burning boat) and thought he was now on Carbon judging by all the plain black rocks. He didn't really get the alchemist archipelago, he'd stopped by a few islands as he went through here and while they all had the same drive they were crazily fixated that the island's most abundant natural resource was the key to making gold.
Which was only really weird on Gold Island but they didn't seem to appreciate the contradiction. Flint almost felt bad about robbing them but then he checked his bag for the extra thousand beli and grinned. He was still whistling cheerily when he came across what looked to be a minor incident occuring. One of the alchemists, flanked by two scary looking guys was cowering and kept saying he didn't have any money. Curious, Flint wandered closer to see what was happening and listened in "Yer lyin', I can see your wallet from here!" "What this? It's... it's a baby kangaroo" "AS IF WE'D BELIEVE THAT!" the two guys swung for the scientist and were deftly caught by the still curious Flint "Hey, so, what are you guys doing exactly?" "Ain't it obvious?" one grunted as he tried to move his arm "We'#re robbing him!" "Ohhh, that's what that was. OK, you probably shouldn't do that so hurry along, he doesn't have any money any way" "You expect us to believe that? You just want to rob him yourself" one of them growled to which Flint nodded "Well, yeah, if he had any money but he said he didn't" this seemed like a joke to the pirates, unaware of how honest Flint was and one of them struck down bellowing.
In a flash, Flint had a gun in hand and pointed square at the foe's forehead. "I'd rather not shoot you guys, bullets don't grow on trees" there was a blur of movement from behind as the other pirate tried a sneak attack but to his surprise was struck by a pistol sailing free of it's holster and swinging round to hit his jaw. The blow knocked him over as Flint caught the second revolver and pointed both square at the still standing foe "You should probably go now" he said, impassively. Swallowing hard, the pirate agreed. As the two figures got smaller in the distance, Flint turned to the academic and was surprised to be thanked profusely "Oh thank you, thank you, I was afraid those hoodlums would realise I had a large amount of Beli hidden in my boots" "Oh really?" "Yes. Is there anyway I could possible repay you?" "... Could I have your boots?"
---
The scientistn wasn't rich, Flint only took a fistful of beli (he hadn't gone that soft) and tossed it up and down as he walked. He'd heard the Black Moon pirates were somewhere on the alchemist archipelago... so far he hadn't found any sign of them. He sighed, sitting down on the far edge of Carbon Island. "Guess I'm swimming for the next one" he murmured aloud as he tried to think where to go next..

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #111111; width:325px; padding:15px; border-left: 10px solid E6E6E6; vertical-align:top;] The Black Moon Pirates had spent the past couple weeks island hopping around the Archipelago. Not for supplies, mind you, because the Captain had a rather keen sense of keeping order and maintaining at least the basics for survival of a crew at sea. However, what became priority this close to the start of the Grand Line was information. The islands were home to scientists, alchemists, and people who generally spent a lot of time studying the world around them. If Rei was right, then there was probably a high chance that those research materials could be located and used, along with the ones she'd stolen from the Marines to help navigate their way through the first half of the Grand Line.
Of course, despite this, the Captain was mindful that some of the crew had started to grow anxious to begin their adventure. They were ready to set sail and she couldn't blame them, but the Captain was convinced that this wasn't the right time just yet. As far as she was concerns, One Piece wasn't going anywhere. For now, it was better to heir on the side of caution and be prepared. Rei could be called many things, but she hadn't survived this long to be considered a fool. She knew the stories about the Grand Line and the dangers that awaited, and had taken every precaution.
"Captain, how much farther? We've been wandering around for the past four hours. If you buy anymore books, the weight will sink the ship." One of the crewmen whined, causing her to glance back curiously to two young men loaded down with several bags of thick leather bound books and grimoire. "Besides, I thought all this philosopher's stone stuff was a bunch of myth and superstition. Why do we need all these?" He questioned. Of course, most of the crew was aware that despite her nickname, Rei was no witch, at least not the magical sort. She might have fought like a devil, but her abilities didn't come from some dark ritual or hexes.
"All science was consider magic before it was understood to be truth. You don't stand next to a fire without learning about how hot it is. Chances are we may be able to find more information on where we're going." Rei explained a bit cryptically. "Besides, I'm still missing something." She added calmly, pushing her hands into her pocket as her blue eyes lifted to the clouds above them. Although, offered very little explanation as to what was so important, the crew seemed to have some guess. Despite some success in acquiring several never crew members, Rei was short a very important position on the ship - a first mate.
It was a role very few could fill and one that Rei had honestly been torn over for a while now. The bounty hunters were only under contract, which meant most pirates would be weary to trust anyone who didn't consider themselves a pirate. Of course, there was the newest recruit, but Minoru was an ex-Marine and a bit to easily swayed by a pretty face, which could be troublesome. No, what the Captain needed was someone she could trust to maintain order, even in the event that something happened to her. They would need to be strong and sensible, but trustworthy, despite their role as a pirate.
Unfortunately, traits like loyalty were hard to come by on the sea. Going into the Grand Line without someone to have your back though was suicide and while Rei could be reckless, she wanted to live long enough to find One Piece. The two crew men exchanged curious glances, but soon shrugged their shoulders and continued to follow. Most of the crew had been with the Captain long enough to learn she never did anything with out a reason and always looked out for the crew above all else, even putting her own life at risk in many situations. So, decided to let the matter go and quickly picked up the pace behind her as they made their way back towards the black rocky shore where the ship had been tied off.

Squinting around, Flint finally noticed something else on the shoreline. He'd seen it while looking around but being his usual unobservant self he hadn't properly clocked it as being a PIRATE ship. After looking for a moment and stroking his chin, he nodded and started walking towards it. It'd be nice to say he was doing it because he'd realised his search was over and that he'd found the pirate ship of his future crew, but unfortunately he was thinking of stealing it. Yup, despite noticing the ship and knowing full well what the flag was for he'd completely ignored the fact that the flag was the one for Rei Satsuki and her Black Moon Pirates. He drew one of his pistols and idly checked that it was fully loaded, he should test fire it but that'd ruin the element of surprise. As he approached the mooring he looked at the ship, head tilted to one side, was there no-one on board?
Well, that wasn't fair, he couldn't just take a ship with no-one on it. He folded his arms, stuck his lip out and wondered what to do now. Eventually he decided he had to wait for the crew to get back, sitting crosslegged on the shore, revolvers resting across his lap with the chain dangling between his crossed legs. He scratched his scar idly wondering where exactly the Black Moon Pirates could be on this archipelago. ... Nope, still hadn't made the jump in logic yet, even as he looked at the oddly familiar Jolly Roger hanging from the mast. It was a nice ship but the more he looked at it the more he realised he probably couldn't just steal the ship. While it might be his first instinct, he couldn't exactly navigate and more to the point a ship this size needed seamen to run it. He was a super badass, no doubt, but he couldn't run a ship by himself, he'd need some people to help. He looked up at random and spotted in the distance a group of people walking towards him, one of whom in the middle looked pretty familiar but, ehh, it'd be no good to just back out now. Holding the gun up he pointed one at the approaching crew and spoke as clearly as he could "Sorry guys, need to commandeer your ship to find someone. I won't shoot anybody but need a lift to the next couple of islands so I can find-" wait, he blinked, that face was familiar even from a distance and he raised an eyebrow "Wait, Satsuki-san? Ohhhhh, this is your ship. Huh. I don't normally have good luck" spinning the gun with admirable speed, Flint slipped it into his pocket and walked up to the approaching crew.
Snapping a foot together he held his hand up in the marine salute, assuming it was multi-purpose,and spoke his intentions "I'm Flint, former cowboy outlaw, current pirate, requesting to join your crew!" he dropped the hand and rested his thumbs on his gun holsters, smiling with his eyes shut "I don't really have anywhere to go and since you busted me out of jail (indirectly) I figure I owed you one. "Desperado" Flint at your service"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #111111; width:325px; padding:15px; border-left: 10px solid E6E6E6; vertical-align:top;] The crews initial response to the young gunslinger was one of general confusion and disbelief as they passed each other silent glances, not because of what he was doing, mind you. It was one thing to steal a ship or even try to wrangle a crew, though they could admit it took some audacity to assume one person could force that many people into servitude. No, rather what was going through the minds of the men was what the Captain was going to do the sap when she found out about this. Stealing from the Black Witch was paramount to suicide and threatening her crew... Well, most of the crew had learned it was better to stay out of the way. Speak of the devil, they didn't have to wait long as their eyes all dropped back to the familiar image of the Captain as the trio returned from their shopping.
Rei had noted the curious gathering on the shore, even from a distance, so immediately knew something was wrong. Trouble and she wasn't the root cause - that was a new one. "What in the name of Gol D. Roger is going on here?" Rei questioned calmly, though there was a slight edge of impatience to her tone that seemed to demand answer. Before the crew could explain, however, a young blonde drew her attention as her name was mention. Needless to say, Rei was pleasantly surprised at the sight of the handsome rouge that now hopped down from the ship.
A faint smirk crossed her lips as he snapped into a salute and began to explain that he was a gunslinger. More than that though, he was asking to join the crew because somehow, without attempting to, she had managed to save his life by busting him out of his imprisonment. "I see." Rei answered, her expression seeming to be lost in thought as she looked him over. Desperado? She couldn't quite remember any details about the identity of his name, but looking him over, Flint was certainly easy on the eyes. Physically, he was build with muscles evident beneath his shirt, though not overly so. It was his eyes, however, that seemed to draw her in, a color that couldn't help recall the sensation of looking into the clouds of a hurricane.
"That's a very noble gesture, Mister Flint. However, you shouldn't feel any obligation to thank me. What I did was little more than a whim. I have no intention of becoming a hero, I'm just a pirate." She explained casually, never one to stretch the truth or toot her own horn. However, there was something that continued to puzzle her about this young man, something she couldn't quite put her finger one. "There is one thing I would like to know though, Mister Flint. You had your freedom, you might not have had anywhere to go back to, but there's any number of places that a person could start over. Instead, you spent all that time looking for a group of outlaws with the intent to join their ranks." Rei pointed out though, moving a bit closer towards Flint with a steady, almost cat-like ease.
"Not that I'm opposed to having such a handsome addition to my crew, mind you. There just aren't many men willing to sell their soul to a witch to obtain what it is they really want." She added, her words an almost purr as she leaned forward a bit with a flirtatious and somewhat playful smile. However, for all her flirtation, Rei was much sharper than many gave her credit for. "So, what is it that you truly want, Flint-san?" The witch asked in soft, but knowing tone. A person did not turn their back on the world for no reason. No, there was something else that drove Flint to seek them out and she intended to find out what it was. Whether he would admit that truth or she would have to drag it out of him more slowly, remained to be seen, but Captain always got what she wanted eventually, one way or another.

Flint seemed blissfully oblivious to the flirting of his new captain as he listened intently and, his grandmother would point out, as politely as ever a man listened to a lady (or stone-cold pirate witch, if we're really going with what baa-chan would say) and was slightly baffling to the crew. What, first he was robbing the ship and taking the crew hostage now he was signing up for the captain? What was this guy's problem... still, Flint did listen to her and as she said that he didn't owe her anything, Flint nodded and chipped in " Oh I know, even if you saved me from the axe, it wasn't intentional in the least" he smiled as he said it, but the crew would likely find it slightly uncomfortable, he didn't seem to hold a particularly high value to his own life. So it made his perplexed look at Rei's next question all the stranger, he tilted his head to one side as she asked the question as if the thoughts were going through his mind He noticed her moving closer but rather than show any sign of intimidation he kept his eyes level, an air of perfect relaxation around him, his arms folded even with his gaze kept level with hers. As she leant in, commenting on his handsomeness Flint didn't even seem to react. A poker face? Some of the crew might have thought so, other (more alert) crewmen would likely notice the flirting... <- <- <- ...shooting directly over Flint's head as he looked at Rei again. It wasn't that he was asexual, he noticed she was a WOMAN, he even noticed that she was attractive it's just that Flint didn't really consider the option she found HIM attractive as well. Thumbs resting on his revolvers he considered her question, his face obviously troubled by the thought. After a few moments deliberation he said simply " No idea" to the collective collapse of Rei's crewmen as he seemed so deeply ponderous of this thought. As if to clarify, not that he thought it was neccessary but still he gestured with his hand and started up " I mean, I want revenge on the world government but revenge just sort of eats you up inside so it isn't ALL I want to do. I think I want to find something or someone else to protect. I can't speak for my soul, if I was selling it to a witch she should probably try for a discount; it's not in the best condition. I do want things from this world, Money, Fame, Revenge... but I think I want to go with you and your crew to do it, so that's why. Sorry, that probably sounds weak. I could say it's because I owe you my life, but honestly it's just how I feel. It's lonely being a cowboy, I'd rather be a pirate with you guys" he scratched he back of his head, he always misconstrued himself, that probably came out all wrong... He couldn't think of a good way to put it, so he simply put his hands on his guns and said, abruptly " I may not know what I truly want yet, but I promise to tell you when it occurs to me." he gave a thumbs up, unsure how this comment would be taken by Rei's loyal pirate allies...

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #111111; width:325px; padding:15px; border-left: 10px solid E6E6E6; vertical-align:top;] Rei listened as Flint explained that he was aware that her actions, nor the crews had been intentional, contended that this was more than some random case of hero worship. However, as Flint soon explained when it came to the matter of his goals, he simply didn't know. Which earned a somewhat humorous reaction from the crew as they had been expecting some great calling or purpose to his reasoning. It seemed it wasn't quite that complicated though, as the young man confessed to several reason, but settled on the Captain understood better than most - loneliness. Looking him over a final time though, she seemed convinced that he wasn't making anything up, since he didn't display any of the classic signs of a lying.
"Alright. I guess I can live with that." The Captain stated simply, much to the shock of the crew. "Welcome to the crew, Mister Flint." She explained with a smile, as several mouths fell open in shock. Sure, the Captain was known for being reckless, but nothing to the scale of accepting someone she'd only known barely five minutes.
"Captain?!" Several of them bark in unison and disbelief, earning a curious look from Rei. "You can't be serious? This guy could be an assassin for all we know. He could murder us in our sleep." One of them explained, attempting to spell out the dangers without necessarily stepping on the Captain's toes, since she could be very stubborn when she believed someone was trying to give her orders.
"He's not." Rei answered flatly. "I'm a good judge of character." She explained, in her usual proud and matter of fact tone. "Besides, if he gives us any trouble, I'll freeze him solid and throw him in the ocean for the Sea Kings." The Captain added with a satisfied smile, which earned a skeptical look from the crew. Did she really have to be so confident... or that cheerful when talking about murder? Still, the Captain did have a point in some respects. She had hand chosen every member of the crew and things had turned out well so far, but of all the weird people the Captain had brought back, the gunslinger was probably the most concerning.
The Captain must have noticed the weird looks as her brow dropped seriously. "Well, what do you want me to do? Test him and see if he passes? It's not like piracy has a guidelines for these sort of situations." She questioned somewhat sarcastically, hoping to find something to settle the crews nerves, though a few glances seemed to confirm they certainly weren't opposed to the idea. Letting out a steady sigh from her nose, Rei lifted a hand to scratch her head in concern. "Alright, I reckon we should see what he's made of before setting out." Rei succeeded finally, before glancing around and suddenly seeming to recall something important in remembrance.
"Fine! How about this? I heard a rumor in town that there's a Sea King taking ships and that it's hold up in a lagoon that's not to far from here. The creatures known for being covered in white scales, if he can bring one back and lives, then he's officially a member of the crew." The Captain suggested calmly, knowing full well that no one would be able to question the legitimacy of someone who had demonstrated their strength and tenacity against a creature very common to the Grand Line. She watched as the crew seemed to nod in agreement, though there was probably no question why the Black Moon Pirates were so feared if this was the initiation process. Not that it was the first time any of them had seen the Captain tangle with one, but most sane people would have run at even the idea of crossing the beasts.
"So, what do you say, Flint? Show everyone how strong you are and if you impress me, I might just make you my first mate." Rei explained with a flirtatious smile, though even the crew couldn't resist a yelp in shock at the offer. Sure, the Captain was friendly, but everyone knew up until now she had led without a first mate. It wasn't a common practice, so even the offer came as something of a surprise, especially considering who Rei was offering it to. Then again, there was always the chance she was being sarcastic or incredibly sadistic to tempt a man with a such a thing, while sending him to what could very well be his demise.

Flint seemed pleased he was being accepted before the crew rapidly chimed in and described to Captain Satsuki exactly why she shouldn't be accepting his generous offer. He wanted to argue back but they actually made a really good point, he kind of WAS an incredibly dangerous bountyhead who was just saying he wanted to be on their ship for fun, it'd be weird if none of them doubted him. He folded his arms as Rei detailed his mission and listened impassively at her offer. He stroked his chin while the crew seemed to be leaning in before frowning and rubbing his head awkwardly "Sorry Cap'n, I don't think I'll be able to do that" Flint sighed as he rummaged in the back carrying his things.
The crew were naturally unsurprised by this, and one of the bolder ones scoffed "Huh, we shoulda know you were all talk" while Flint showed no reaction he produced a piece of newspaper from his bag and handed it over to Rei for her and the crew to look at.
GOLD ISLAND HERO[/size][/b] written by Remi Dean A mysterious blond vigilante armed with a pair of pistols has saved our poor archipelago from the serious threat of the Albino Sea-Kings by defeating the beasts in return for the cash reward. He slew the beasts on Gold Island before they could retreat to the safety of their lagoon When we sought to interview our hero he declined comment saying simply "It's 100 belli per word" and after taking 500 from our cameraman he left the scene as mysteriously as he arrived.
To accompany this article, there was a photo of a man, indubitbly Flint judging from the scar on his eyebrow and blond hair flashing what seemed like the peace sign with a completely dead-pan face, eyebrows making a single line and mouth non-smiling while three mammoth beasts lay around him on the dock with X's for eyes.
Flint seemed to be pretty damn nonchalent about this while several of the crew stared with chattering teeth and sheer horror in their eyes at this monster in human form who had apparently taken down three sea kings by himself. Flint didn't even register their surprise as he said to Rei "I'm sorry, but I won't be able to bring one back given I already dealt with them. If you could set me another challenge I promise to prove my worth" . . . "Captain, this guy... might be an idiot..." one of the crew carefully whispered to Rei, unsure how to react to this combination of monstrous power and limited common sense.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: #111111; width:325px; padding:15px; border-left: 10px solid E6E6E6; vertical-align:top;] Rei had to admit, she was a little surprised when Flint confessed that he wouldn't be able to do the task and hesitate a moment as the crew was quick to call the young man's bluff. It was only when pulled a piece of paper with an article on it out and offered it to her, that Rei caught sight of the real reasons Flint couldn't bring back the scales. The Captain didn't say a word, though a rather evident smirk managed to creep to her face as several members of the crew moved to peak over her shoulder curiously to get a look at the article. It was hard to deny that the man in the photo was clearly the gunslinger and it seemed he had a rather good sense of business at that, much to the general disbelief of the crew.
Flint soon explained that he's already dealt with the animal, but was more than happy to take on another challenge to prove himself. It was an admission that earned a look from several of the crew that ranged from annoyance at what was viewed as his showing off to downright disbelief. It was then that one of them leaned over and whispered to the Captain, earning a faint chuckle in amusement.
"Possibly, but every pirate is a called a fool at some point. In any case, what we're holding is solid proof to his skills as a pirate and that was the whole point of the challenge." She explained calmly, folding the paper back up and returning it to Flint. "These islands are full of scholars and alchemists, the only threat here is from the sea and since he's conquered that, I'm afraid that I'm out of ideas. The only other option would be to spar with one of us and I'm not really in the mood to waste time bandaging one of you up and wasting medical supplies." The Captain added, her practical natural kicking in.
Then again, Rei had already decided that she wanted Flint on her crew, so it all came down to the crew this time. Unless one of them was willing to risk life and limb on something as fickle as suspicion and their own fear, then the issue was settled. Of course, the Captain knew her crew better than anyone. They may have been protective, but it was wiser to keep living and a close eye on the gunfighter, than to throw their lives away on something so foolish.
"Well then, since no one has any further objections..." Rei began, glancing around and noting the nods of submission from the crew. There was no point in arguing with someone as stubborn as the Captain anyway, because she always got what she wanted - one way or another. "Since you manage to slay the beast, I reckon that makes you my first mate, Flint. Welcome to the crew." She spoke with a cool smirk, offering him a hand to seal the agreement.
"I expect you to abide by the rules of the of the ship and crew, but for the time being, I believe this calls for a celebration." The Captain deciding, motioning for some of the men to head back to the kitchen to prepare a meal and drinks for their new comrade. Several cheers went up in excitement, since moments like this some of the few times the Captain really allowed the crew to cut loose and have some fun. Of course, with no Marines anywhere nearby, no Sea Kings to worry about, and the island so close by, it was a small price to pay for some much needed relaxation and bounding time among the crew.
